Xiaomi, at the moment, is very popular in China and in India. How much is the popularity, you wonder? Well, the company has enough admirers to make it the third largest smartphone manufacturer in the world.
The company was standing in the fifth spot in the global manufacturers list a few months ago. And now, according to Strategy Analytics, Xiaomi has managed to ship 18 million handsets in Q3 2014 and has a market share of 5.2 percent. The company shipped only 5.2 million devices a year ago and their market share was just 2.1 percent in the third quarter of 2013. Samsung, though they have come down from 88.4 million shipments and a market share of 35 percent in Q3 2013, is at the top of the list with 79.2 million phone shipments and 24.7% market share. Apple is in the second spot with 39.3 million iPhone shipments and 12 percent market share (down from 13.4 percent in Q3 last year) and LG came in fourth after shipping 16.8 million smartphones.
What has helped Xiaomi to become successful is their Mi 3 smartphone, which came with high-end specs such as a 5-inch full HD display, a 2.3 GHz Snapdragon 800 processor, 2 GB of RAM, 16 GB of storage, a 13MP rear camera and a 3,050 mAh battery. The device became quite popular in India, where it was sold for around $220. The company has also been successful with their Redmi 1S in the country. Their Mi 4 handset will be released in India in the coming months.
Meanwhile, global shipment of smartphones has increased by 27 percent within a year. It was 320.4 million in the third quarter of 2014 (up from 252.9 million in Q3 of 2013). The analysts are saying that though there was a decline of sales in Europe and North America, due to increased demand in Asia and Africa there was growth in shipments.
