Bentley is an established player in the luxury auto segment, no doubt. But the British marque is not happy with its toys being the fancy of the rich who have a subdued craving for speed. They are looking at the speed-junkie playboys of the world too and the W12 variant of their upcoming crossover should push Bentley into the realms where luxury meets sheer performance.
Bentley’s sales and marketing director, Kevin Rose, was quoted that the company engineers will ensure that the W12 version of the crossover, which has already been touted as the “most luxurious SUV on the market”, will also be the fastest “SUV on sale”.
To achieve that, the crossover, which could reportedly be called the “Falcon”, will have to get the better of crossovers such as the BMW X5 and X6 M, the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S and Range Rover Sport SVR. Bentley’s luxurious terrain tamer would get ample power to do so from the familiar twin-turbo W12 engine. But it remains to be seen how it will be mapped and tuned and at what value will they set the power output.
Interestingly, Bentley is not banking on the powerful gas-guzzler to be the best seller in the crossover range they are bringing out. With increasing popularity and demand for eco-friendlier wheels, buyers are likely to queue up for the plug-in hybrid variant. Rose was quoted by Car & Driver that he expects so too. The eco-friendly crossover variant is expected to have an electric-only range of around 30 miles.
The other engine options in the crossover line-up could be a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 and a version of Audi’s 4.2-liter V8 TDI, custom-tuned by Bentley.
