ASUS is going through its lineup and doing some updates, just like we saw with the recent launch of the new Nexus 7. If you’re looking for a 7-inch tablet that can also make phone calls, though, you may be more interested in the updated ASUS Fonepad 7.
Given that 5+ inch smartphones have somehow become commonplace, placing a phone call on a 7-inch tablet isn’t all that far-fetched. Even the previous Fonepad 7 did that. With this refresh, the tablet gets a 1280 x 800 display and a 1.6GHz Intel Atom Z2560 dual core processor. There aren’t a heck of a lot of Android tablets out there powered by Atom, with most turning to Qualcomm or Nvidia for their chips, so that’s at least one differentiating factor in addition to the whole “phone calls on a real tablet” schtick.
Rounding off the specs, we find 1GB of RAM, 5MP rear camera (F/2.4), a paltry 8GB of storage capacity and a microSD slot for up to 64GB more. The specs won’t wow anyone, but this is an improvement over the previous version. You’ll also find SonicMaster tech in those dual front speakers as well. With IFA going on, I’m sure more news of more ASUS mobile products will start hitting the digital airwaves of the Internet soon enough.
