This past Tuesday, Sony announced the winners of the Sony World Photography Awards’ to recognize and reward, what they say are the best contemporary photographers of the world.

Now, this isn’t any small contest, the Sony World Photography Awards happens to be the world’s biggest photography competition that gets approximately 100,000 entries across the Youth, Mobile and Open categories.

Mobile is just one of many categories in the competition. Others include Professional, Open and Youth.

There were more than 96,000 entries across the Youth, Open and Mobile categories. Mobile alone saw 10,200 photo submissions, and winners in the category were chosen by an online vote from a shortlist of 20 photos. The entry that won first place got 6,718 votes, Sony says.

Anyone can pretty much enter the competition as it is Free for everyone, it doesn’t ask for any professional experience or have requirements for any abilities, Sony wants to encourage everyone to submit their best work as a series or even if it’s just a single click.

The images that are submitted from around the world are then judged by the World Photography Organisation and a selected jury from that seats the photographic industry’s most respected professionals.

This has to be a really big deal for someone winning the competition, as the awards reach an astounding $30,000 USD in cash prizes plus Sony offers their latest digital equipment to motivate them in this work and besides, the best part is the fame, recognition and unsaid rewards that come from the industry. This is huge from every regard.

Like every year, this year’s annual awards gala took place in London again, where a global audience was in attendance at the historic Somerset House (a London Landmark) to not only recognize but reveal the winners names and celebrate the best of the best in each categories.

Somerset House is a Historic Landmark

The Competitions:

The Sony World Photography Awards has multiple competitions:

  • Professional – 15 categories, judged on a series of images, aimed at serious photographers
  • Open – 10 categories, judged on a single image, open to all
  • Youth – 3 categories; for photographers, aged 19 and under, Students – for those studying photography
  • Mobile Phone – for images taken with any mobile phone

In 2014, these photographs and competition coverage was seen in over 170 countries and more than 500,000+ articles were written about the Sony World Photography Awards. In 2015, it increased to 171 countries and received more than 173,000 entries for everyone hoping to win the grand prize awards.

Well, for a photographer, these awards have the power to change the lives of anyone who enter them forever.

What is fascinating is the announcement of the “Mobile Phone” Category Winners. What we have heard a lot about are the iPhones being the model pick for the pictures on mobile devices, but this one was different. Everyone could participate regardless of the mobile phone they used.

So here is the list of Top 20 Photos From The Mobile Phone Category. While we love most of the pictures, we are really surprised at the number 1 pick.

What do you guys think about these photos? Do you agree with the winning photo as number one?
