Just having a regular touchscreen cell phone is not enough to please the masses anymore, because everyone wants to use more than one finger at once. While the guys in Finland haven’t come up with an official solution for S60 5th Edition just yet, some enthusiasts have come up with something on their own.
The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is the first touchscreen cell phone from Nokia and it rocks the new S60 Touch user interface. At default, it will only recognize one input at a time, but that doesn’t cut the mustard, right? That’s why Stantum has taken it upon itself to create a multitouch interface on the resistive touchscreen.
A full demo was done at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona and, by most accounts, the solution seems to work very well. Some have even said that it’s an “amazing result.” That’s the good news. The bad news is that the multitouch-ness will only work with “specialized hardware”, so existing 5800 owners can’t do multitouch with this just yet.
And then we have good news again. Some guy named Jamie Fuller has taken it upon himself to bring multitouch to Nokia S60 devices and he’s showing off how it works with an experimental Guitar Hero-like demo game. Check it out.
