It’s pretty unlikely that you have owned or used a Sagem cell phone at some point in your life and soon, it may not even be possible. It was reported back in August that Safran would be selling Sagem Mobile to a venture capital firm. Well, as part of that acquisition, the Sagem brand will be killed off and fall into utter mobile phone obscurity.
The current plan will be to put an end to Sagem-branded phones by the end of this year, but that doesn’t mean that Sagem will cease to exist. Instead, new owner Sofinnova plans on using Sagem as an OEM rather than using it to build self-branded handsets. You may not know it, but some of the lower-end Sony Ericsson phones on the market are actually put together by Sagem.
Sofinnova also plans on using Sagem to push “new products and innovations” in the mobile phone industry. How innovative they become remains to be seen.
