Seeing how the Google Android-powered T-Mobile G1 will be exclusive to T-Mobile, how are AT&T subscribers (and Canadians) supposed to get in on the Android action? As with so many other devices, the critical step involved is getting the smartphone unlocked, so is it possible to unlock the T-Mobile G1? The definite answer, it seems, is yes.
As you may or may not know, T-Mobile’s official policy is that they are willing to provide you with a SIM Unlock code, provided that you have been a T-Mobile customer for a minimum of 90 days. You can only make this request once every 90 days, but we were wondering if this policy would also apply to the exclusive Android phone. The Giz asked T-Mo, and they said that the G1 would be treated like any other T-Mobile phone.
What this means is that 90 days after next month’s launch, we’re probably going to see some unlocked T-Mobile G1 smartphones pop up in the usual channels — Craigslist, eBay, etc. — for your buying pleasure. I wonder what functionality you’d lose by bringing the phone to Rogers, Fido, or AT&T?
