When I say that a better camera could be in the works for the 3G iPhone, I’m not referring to the one that is set to launch next month. I’m talking instead about the third generation Apple iPhone.
The jobs section of the Apple website has a listing for a “Lead Camera Design Engineer – iPhone.” Seeing how the position has just popped up recently, it’s very unlikely that the person hired would be working on the camera mechanics of the 3G iPhone, so this means that the innovation and advancement won’t be in store for us until the third generation handset. The position calls for “research into both current and future camera technologies, evaluation of proposed solutions… and design of production line testing setups.”
This listing does not necessitate that the 3G iPhone will have a camera that is of equal quality to the existing unit, but it does sound like Apple won’t be taking the camera side of things all that seriously until a refreshed unit, possibly in Summer 2009 or so.
