Here’s a strange twist to what Samsung normally does. When you think of the Korean manufacturer, the image that normally comes to mind is an incredibly slim handset with a multi-megapixel camera and possibly a slick slider form factor. None of these apply to today’s revealing. The Samsung Solid is the company’s first “strongphone”, which is their nice way of referring to a military-grade handset.
This thing is built extra tough, adhering to the IP54 rating for dust, water, and shock resistance. The candybar naturally isn’t as skinny as some of Samsung’s other offerings, but the rubber body will ensure that it will survive even the worst of conditions. Critical features include include an FM tuner, GPRS, WAP 2.0, VGA camera, Java, Bluetooth, and a built-in flashlight. There is also an SOS feature wherein a message will immediately be sent to a predefined number. To activate SOS, simply hit the volume button three times in quick succession.
The extra strong Samsung Solid is available through O2 for 60GBP.
