The Toshiba Qosmio F45 laptop caught the eye of many recently because it is a HD-DVD laptop that you can afford to buy without first having to mortgage your house. But is it any good? An early review gives us a look.
The savings on this machine come in part from the smaller display – just 15.4 inches. It’s a 1280×800 WXGA display, though, and it is high definition. According to the review it is a giant step up from a normal display. There is a significant problem with the HD, though. Thanks to a HDMI port the machine can output HD to a TV, thus eliminating the need for a separate HD-DVD player for the home The problem is that it only exports 1080i and not 1080p, so purists will be disappointed with the resulting quality. They will also be disappointed with the proprietary HD-DVD software, because it lacks the high level controls that HD-DVD makes possible and which heavy users demand.
The F45 has a black and white design which might look a bit too much like a police car, but at least Toshiba tried to do something unique with it. The processor and the rest of the details make it a generally usable and affordable option in its niche.
