Leave it up to the geeks on the Internet to do things that were previously considered impossible. One oft-cited fault of the iPhone is its inability to run third-party applications. That hurdle has now apparently been overcome. A developer who calls himself “Nightwatch” has managed to compile, load, and run a third-party program on his Apple iPhone using ARM/Mach-O Toolchain.

The special project involved getting the independent “Hello World” application to launch on Apple’s freshman foray into the world of mobile phones. It’s not perfect quite yet, but it does represent a fairly monumental milestone for iPhone hackers and personalization experts.

We’ve seen Windows Mobile devices sporting the iPhone interface… will the inverse be happening too?
