The Volkswagen Phaeton got removed from the US market in late 2005 due to weak sales and everyone thought that the German automaker was going to give up on the moniker, at least around these parts. Not so, apparently, because VW was simply giving the Phaeton a breather. It seems the luxury sedan is gearing up for re-entry within the next couple of years.
Andreas Meurer, spokesman for VW of America, made the official announcement during an interview with Bloomberg. While it is entirely possible that the recently facelifted 2008 Phaeton is States-bound, it is more likely that Meurer was referring to a next-generation model due some time after 2009.
Personally, I still think it isn’t all that bright an idea. If you want a luxury sedan, wouldn’t you just walk to the other side of the lot and take a gander at an Audi?
