To some people, they are a fashion statement, giving another outlet to customize their ride and express themselves. To others, they’re an eye sore and a distraction on the road. It seems the latter might be winning out. New York legislators are working on a bill that would “ban the use of ‘spinner’ wheels and hubcaps.” State Senator John Sabini reintroduced S.B. 1640 to New York State Legislature and it seems it is currently up to debate.
I’m not a fan of spinners myself, and I wouldn’t imagine putting them on anything other than huge honking SUVs, but at the same time, I don’t feel like they should be banned either. The SEMA Action Network agrees with me and they’re “calling on citizens to pressure lawmakers to reject the bill.” The advocacy group says that “spinner hubcaps have no proven detrimental effect on motor vehicle safety.”
