Asus drops external color display in W5Fe multimedia laptop

Asus is probably best known for creating top notch motherboards, but they also make some rather fantastic laptops too. And it’s not all about Lamborghini badging either. For something a little different from the norm, there is the new Asus W5Fe laptop, which comes with a “cutting-edge SideShow external auxiliary display on the LCD cover.” There appears to be a five-way navigator next to it, not unlike that found on a cell phone, and the display is in full color too.

On the inside, you’ve got yourself a 12-inch widescreen, a 1.3 megapixel swivel webcam, a card slot, and Bluetooth 2.0+EDR. Power-wise, the W5Fe is no slouch either, as it comes equipped with a Core 2 Duo processor from Intel (your choice of T7600, T7400, T7200, T5600, and T5500), Windows Vista from Microsoft, up to 1.5GB of DDR2 533/667MHz RAM, a SATA hard drive as large as 160GB, TV-out, 802.11a/b/g WiFi, and 1GB NAND Flash for the SideShow display. For the SideShow stuff, you don’t need to boot up the laptop fully, giving you convenient access to “information such as phone numbers and addresses, or other information that you need to get at quickly.”

No word on price.
