Cell phone makers want to make their handhelds smaller and thinner, so it’s up to component makers to do the same. Texas Instruments has announced the smallest linear LED driver to date. This “two-bank, low dropout (LDO) regulator” is designed to support “LED lighting in portable applications.”

What this means is that the tiny 1.2 mm x 1.2mm package can be shoved into even the smallest of MP3 players, providing users with fun “blinking and dimming of color keypads and navigation pad lights.” Yup, pulsing lights on the go.

Device makers can go ahead and start ordering batches of 1,000 for $0.65 a piece. More specific deets can be found here.
