Here’s another dent in that bulletproof reputation. Toyota’s youth-oriented sub-brand, Scion, is recalling 30,000 tC sports coupes over a slightly disheartening safety concern. Apparently, if you leave the key in the ignition (or if it was removed within the last minute and a half) and then you slam the door shut, the side airbag may spontaneously deploy. This could be a bit of a headache if you’re outside of the vehicle when it happens, but I’d hate to think what would happen if you’re actually sitting in the driver seat when the side airbag comes flying out toward you.
Only 17 vehicles have demonstrated this strange tendency thus far, but the recall is checking models sold between March 2004 and March 2006. If you’ve got one of these sporty numbers, you may want to check out this number: 1-866-707-2466. That’s the toll-free line for the “Scion Customer Experience Center.”
