In a truly strange timing coincidence, the IEEE has, for some reason, decided that they need a revised standard for Li-ion batteries. The update will reportedly revise ‘design analysis, testing and qualifications’ of the batteries. Presumably the word explosion will factor into the group’s work, too. The project is supposed to be done within 18 months, but the group’s work with the 802.11n standard shows that they aren’t exactly the world’s fastest movers. IEEE P1825, dealing with batteries for digital cameras and camcorders is first up for revision, followed by IEEE 1625 for laptops.
