Remember some time back when my colleague, T.O. Whenham, reported on the HumanCar and its on-road pedalling fury? You can now take the similar “alternative fuel” philosophy to the water with the Pumpabike, a human-powered hydrofoil that can skim “fast enough to over-take rowers.”
You may look a little strange on this thing (as you can tell by the video below), because you need to bounce up and down on it in order for you to propel through the water. If anything, it looks incredibly tiring (but kind of fun at the same time).
Will this catch on as the next big water sport, overtaking such popular pastimes as surfing, water-skiing, and boogie-boarding? It’s possible, but maybe we need to wait until people can start doing tricks on the Pumpabike a la the X Games.
Designed to be “a bike for water”, the Pumpabike is available for £600 (US$1,143) and comes with a bit of a learning curve.
