Skype = PC + headset, right? Not exclusively anymore.
Four companies are bringing to market portable phones that will use Skype to operate via Wi-Fi but not require a computer. The interface is the same, and you can store and update your Skype contacts from your PC. All you need is a Wi-Fi network that doesn’t require browser authentication.
The four names involved — Belkin, Edgecore, Netgear, and SMC — are pretty big players in the industry, so there’s a good chance the idea of portable Skype will catch on. We know that the Edgecore phone will sell for about US$250 and that the Netgear model will go for about US$299. Release dates are expected to be soon, but we have no firm details at this time.
