Intel has always been at the forefront of computer processors, leading the way with their bargain basement-minded Celeron line, right through to what we all know and love as the Pentium, in all its different incarnations. We’ve experienced Centrino, and have moved into the realm of dual cores.
We were expecting the launch of Merom Core 2 Duo to come some time soon, but that date is a lot closer than you may think. It seems that now the next-generation mobile processor will be ready as early as next week — July 23 — and we’ve even gotten word of the expected pricing plan.
On the entry-level end of things is the pair of 2MB L2 Core 2 Duos. The 1.66GHz T5500 and the 1.8GHz T5600 are priced at $209 and $241, respectively. Bump yourself up to 4MB L2, and you get to choose from the 2GHz T7200 at $294, the 2.16GHz T7400 at $423, and the 2.33GHz T7600 at $637.
All these price points are based on buying batches of 1,000 CPUs at a time.
