How badly are things going for the big three carmakers headquartered in Michigan? They aren’t even popular with the residents of their own state anymore. A poll by the Detroit News and WXYZ-TV7 shows that 51 percent of Michiganers feel that the Big 3 are only doing a fair or poor job of building vehicles that people want to buy. 60% of respondents weren’t confident that the makers would be able to improve their financial situations.
You can’t be surprised by these results at all. Automotive employment in Michigan has declined by almost 30% in the last six years and you can’t open the paper or turn on the TV without hearing another report about how badly one or all of the companies are doing. Some industry insiders, like David Cole of the Center for Automotive Research, say that this survey isn’t indicative of the true situation, though. People’s perceptions are largely guided by the (usually negative) press and have no true idea of what is actually happening with the makers.
