VoIP is really making waves these days, but it’s still missing something. With 3G well on its way, mobile phones have added a heck of a lot more functionality to the picture. Borrowing a tagline from Samsung, LG-Nortel announced yesterday that they have partnered up with Microsoft to develop the “world’s first” WinCE 6.0 based videophone.
No details surrounding the handset have been released at this time, because, well, they haven’t officially started working on it together yet. LG-Nortel will also be working closely with Bill Gates and friends on “developing and marketing IP telephones.” The expectation is that this new videophone will make a fairly substantial splash in the smartphone segment, as it will be a handset designed specifically with video telephony in mind.
Microsoft has recently been pushing hard for VoIP implementation, and with the added support from LG-Nortel’s expertise in videophone and VoIP phone technology, the fruits of their labours should “be appealing greatly to telecom service providers around the world.”
