Lycos launches VoIP chat, surf service

Move over, Skype and Yahoo. Lycos is here.

The familiar search engine and web portal is launching a VoIP service called Lycos Phone, a free downloadable application that does its competitors one better by adding a host of services, including free video calls, unlimited free incoming calls, free streaming video, 100 free minutes of PC-to-landline calls, a free U.S. phone number, free FAX, and free voicemail-to-email service.

Want to surf the Web while chatting with your friends and listening to music? You can do all with Lycos Phone. You can also earn even more free minutes by taking advantage of a series of promotional offers, the details of which will be announced later.

That’s a lot of free stuff, and it’s all part of the new venture between Lycos and Globe7. It is available beginning March 28 for Windows 2000 and XP. Versions supporting Linux, Palm OS, Mac OS, and Pocket PC will be forthcoming.
