I’ve gotten used to the 47 minutes of life I get from my laptop battery from each charge. I don’t know what I’d do with myself if I had two days of battery life. Two days is exactly what the XX25 micro fuel cell from Ultracell promises. It’s a reformed methanol fuel cell. The company has developed a prototype. Like all really useful things, it seems, it will first be available for military use. That means that it can stand up to all sorts of shock and extremes of hot and cold.
The XX25 will be ready for beta testing by the second quarter of the year. We won’t have to wait long – a commercial unit, the UC25, should be available by the end of the year.
The two days of life will be available from a single methanol fuel cell cartridge. The best part is that those cartridges are hot-swappable, so you will never have to turn your laptop off as long as you have extra cartridges around.
