Today, Option N.V. unveiled the GlobeTrotter HSDPA, an HSDPA data card for laptops. With data transfer rates clocking in at up to 1.8Mbps on an HSDPA system, it clearly exceeds even the fastest data transfer rates possible over 3G UMTS by up to 4.5 times.
Operation is not limited to HSDPA networks alone though as the new data card has the capability to connect to other systems. If the card cannot detect an HSDPA network, it will immediately create the most efficient link using GPRS, 3G or EDGE.
Network providers in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa are already setting up to offer the card to their subscribers, but Mobilkom Austria, with 3.4 million subscribers, will become one of the first network providers to present the card. It will do so as it brings to market the Vodafone Mobile Connect Card Broadband (EDGE/HSDPA/UMTS) on January 23.
Mobilkom subscribers who bought the UMTS+EDGE “HSDPA Ready” card do not need to buy another unit. They can upgrade to HSDPA via a change of software. The company would provide the software update at no extra charge.
