Many Apple fans were disappointed when Steve Jobs didn’t unveil the much rumored and anticipated iPod phone during his keynote address this week at MacWorld. Those disappointments will be eased slightly by the news that Apple has filed to trademark the phrase “Mobile Me”. Analysts predict that the phrase, which was filed on January 5th with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for use in a wide range of businesses, is further proof that the iPod phone is near.
Speculation about Apple’s entry into the phone market was fueled by the success of the Motorola ROKR E1, which includes iTunes and has sold out from some suppliers. Apple could look to launch their new phone among existing carriers, or more likely take the more potentially lucrative step of launching an MVNO. That would allow them to leverage their currently red hot brand and their huge portfolio of content. Either way, it is quite likely that we will be hearing “Mobile Me” a lot starting soon.
