Leaving no stone unturned, Memorex is now manufacturing 24-karat gold CDs and DVDs. The benefit, of course, is that gold breaks down far more slowly than other media from exposure to dust, dirt, and chemicals.

Other benefits of the Memorex “protection” include resistance to damage to ultraviolet light, heat, and humidity, not to mention the perennial “rough handling” that commonly plagues portable storage discs of all varieties.

The CD-Rs record at 52X speed, with a capability of 700MB of data storage or 80 minutes of audio recording time. The DVD-Rs record at 8X speed, holding 4.7GB of data or 120 minutes of video.

Worried about the price? Don’t be. You can buy, beginning in April, a three-pack of CD-Rs for just $11.99 (storage cases included). DVD-Rs are a little more pricey but not much, weighing in at $14.99 for a three-pack or $24.99 for a five-pack (again, storage cases included).

And you get these nearly everywhere you can get “normal” CDs and DVDs.

Each and every 24-karat gold disc comes with a lifetime warranty.
