Universal Music Group and SingleTouch Interactive have teamed up to you bring MoveU Mobile, a cell phone geared towards music. The new mobile phone gives users access to personalized entertainment like ringtones, wallpaper images and other music-related downloads.
MoveU Mobile, which will include prepaid cellular service managed by SingleTouch, comes with selected ringtones. However, users will also have the possibility of gaining access to unlimited master and polyphonic ringtones, for a fee of course.
MoveU Mobile will be available at Wal-Mart and other retail outlets by the end of 2005 for only $99.95.
“I can’t put an $800 phone into Wal-Mart,” according to SingleTouch founder Anthony Macaluso. “There are a lot of people out there in the $99 price range that would like to have music on their phone.”
SingleTouch will also be bringing to market mobile phones specifically-made for specific UMG artists, sold via that person’s Web site and carrying content specific to that artist. This is not really a surprising move as SingleTouch has already launched a Hilary Duff-branded phone that has sold 7,000 units so far.
To brand a mobile phone as a music phone, you would expect a bit of iTunes or MP3 support. The MoveU Mobile may disappoint users with the lack of real music on hand that would be expected in a mobile phone this late in the game. It seems to be targeted more to a music fan, who would wan’t music related themes and what not, rather then those who would like to listen to music.
