Agilent Technologies has designed a complete hardware and software solution for mobile point-and-pay solutions. The IrFM (infrared financial messaging) enables a consumer to beam credit, debit or stored-value card information from their wireless device to any vending machine, toll booth, gas pump or ATM with IR port. I wonder what type of security has been implemented in this system? A nearby attacker could capture your IR signal and snatching your financial data.

This seems to be a much more mainstream solution that will take far less to implement in comparison to the e-Port wireless credit card system, where a new card and credit must be established, with the Agilent IrFM solution, you are accessing your existing credit.

Industry’s Only Complete Software and Hardware Infrared Financial Solution Helps IrDA-Enabled Device Manufacturers Save Time, Money

Agilent Technologies Inc. today introduced software compliant with the IrDA’s (Infrared Data Association’s) IrFM (infrared financial messaging) Point and Pay Profile version 1.0. IrFM is a quick and seamless digital payment system for IrDA infrared-enabled devices and point-of-sale terminals. Agilent is the only company that provides a complete software and hardware solution, which eliminates integration risks, saves money and speeds time to market.

An alternative to swiping a credit card through a terminal, the IrFM Point and Pay Profile enables consumers to beam credit, debit or stored-value card information from their mobile phone or PDA to any vending machine, toll booth, gas pump or ATM equipped with an IR port. The information then flows through the transaction approval-request infrastructure much as if it were swiped in. Consumers receive a digital receipt from their mobile phone service provider. Currently available in Korea and Japan, IrFM point and pay simplifies wireless financial transactions for the consumer while providing security for credit/debit card transactions. It also helps reduce the cost of card replacements due to loss, theft and wear.

Agilent’s HSDL-S500 IrFM protocol stack provides API (application program interface) functions in ANSI C programming language source code for easy interfacing. Its small code size minimizes the use of valuable memory in handheld devices. The protocol stack is easily ported to other platforms, saving time and resources when platform changes are needed.

The HSDL-S500 software interfaces with standard IrDA protocol stacks (available as the Agilent HSDL-S100 product) and IrOBEX (object exchange) software (available as the Agilent HSDL-S101 product). Agilent also offers several miniature SIR (serial infrared) transceivers with a height of only 1.6 mm, which is ideal for IrFM applications in the latest ultra-thin handheld designs.
