Inching closer to actual production, Vulcan Inc. has selected Transmeta to supply the Crusoe processor for use in the FlipStart MiniPC. With no date set on its official release, this news draws the FlipStart away from being another vaporware device.
The FlipStart was first shown at Demo 2004 back in February of this year, since then eager mobile junkies have been awaiting its release. How could we not? The MiniPC packs a 1GHz Transmeta Crusoe Processor, 256MB system RAM, 30GB hard drive, 5.6″ HDTV-quality display all into a 5.8″ x 4″ x 1″ aluminum case running on Windows XP.
“Transmeta’s energy efficient, high performance processors are well-suited for FlipStart’s small form factor design,” said Rod Fleck, director of engineering, Vulcan, Inc. “Vulcan has also designed FlipStart to accept a new internal motherboard with Transmeta’s new Efficeon(TM) processor providing exceptional mobile computing capabilities to users in the same mobile form factor.”
“FlipStart is a leading example of the innovative mobile computer designs enabled by Transmeta’s microprocessors,” said Arthur L. Swift, senior vice president of marketing, Transmeta Corporation.
