Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit is the first hotel in Thailand able to provide its guests with 24-hour high-speed Internet access from virtually anywhere on the property, thanks to an advanced Internet Protocol (IP)-based wired and wireless network. Powered by Cisco Systems® equipment, the network is among the most advanced among Thailand hotels and will allow the Sheraton Grande to offer innovative services that attract travelers.
At the heart of the network are the Cisco® Catalyst® 3550 and 2950 switches. The Catalyst 3550 Intelligent Ethernet switch enables the deployment of intelligent services, such as advanced quality of service (QoS), rate-limiting, Cisco security access control lists, multicast management, and high-performance IP routing, while maintaining the simplicity of traditional LAN switching. Wireless access is provided in many places around the hotel via the Cisco Aironet 350 wireless LAN solution.
Sheraton Grande is now the only hotel in Thailand able to provide 24-hour high-speed Internet access to its guest rooms and to other hotel areas such as the lobby and the swimming pool. The hotel’s own IT and technical staff were responsible for the complete installation and maintenance of the system, with close consultation with Cisco engineers.
“The Sheraton Grande has always had a reputation for being innovative and bold in the pursuit of meeting every need of our guests. This new high-speed Internet access service is another way for us to please the modern traveler and discerning businesspeople,” said Richard Chapman, general manager, Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit. “We are very proud to be the first hotel in Bangkok to offer such a service. It would not have been possible without the technology and expertise offered by Cisco Systems.”
Sheraton Grande’s network also uses Cisco Building Broadband Service Manager (BBSM) software. Cisco BBSM is a highly automated service-creation platform that enables simple, plug-and-play, end-user self-provisioning of services, customizable portal and advertising platforms, and Web-based management, reporting and configuration. The Cisco solution allows Sheraton Grande guests to browse the Internet efficiently, use Web telephone services and even run Web conferencing with their own laptops and Web cameras. The network also enables guests to create secure, virtual private network (VPN) connections back to their corporate networks.
“Our system is simple and easy to use, with no need for registration,” added Chapman. “The guest simply plugs a LAN cable from his or her laptop into a hub in the room for rapid, uninterrupted access to the Internet. Wireless access is available virtually anywhere in the hotel and this service is available to the public as well.”
Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit is part of Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. Since 2001, Starwood, the owner, operator, and franchiser of Sheraton, Westin, W Hotels and other properties, has also been introducing wired and wireless broadband Internet infrastructure from Cisco Systems in its U.S. hotels.
“Sheraton Grande is a prime example of how you can use Internet technology to set your company apart from the competition. It has done this by implementing a single, secure broadband infrastructure that enables wired or wireless access anytime, anywhere in the hotel. This has raised the status of the hotel to world-class levels and brought a new dimension to Thailand’s hospitality industry,” said Vorkon Patra-Yanan, regional managing director, Indochina operations, Cisco Systems.
