2.4 GHz Bluetooth Technology Multi Handset Caller ID Cordless Phone

Microtune®, Inc. today announced that a Bluetooth™-based multi-handset caller ID cordless phone, deploying its Bluetooth silicon and software technology, has been recognized as a Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) Innovations Award Honoree for 2003. CEA’s Innovations Awards program, spotlighting advances in digital, video/audio, mobile, networking, wireless communications and other technologies, recognizes products that exhibit excellence in design and engineering. The phone, manufactured by Unical Enterprises, Inc. for Northwestern Bell (NWBell), offers a new breed of 2.4 GHz RF cordless technology that is Bluetooth-enabled to support converging voice and data communications.

Northwestern Bell’s phone (model number 36870) is currently being displayed this week in Unical’s booth (Location: LVCC CEN 1&2/6325) at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, NV. The phone is in production now and available from Sharper Image and the Home Shopping Network, with other retail outlets to be announced soon.

Since 1989, the CEA awards program has given manufacturers and developers an opportunity to have their products judged by a preeminent panel of journalists, designers and engineers. The Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) endorses and acts as advisors to the program, which this year attracted more than 600 entries.

“As a widely renowned consumer technology awards program, Innovations 2003 recognizes the best designed and engineered products across the consumer electronics markets, and we congratulate both Unical and Northwestern Bell on this achievement,” commented Douglas J. Bartek, Chairman and CEO of Microtune. “We are proud to be the strategic Bluetooth supplier to Unical, who is deploying our technology to develop innovative and quality wireless communications products for its customers.”

Implementing Microtune’s highly integrated and cost-effective wireless silicon (OneChip MT0780 solution), the NWBell 36870 phone is a high-performance, feature-rich Bluetooth-based product designed to bridge the gap between phone and PC connectivity. As a core feature, it enables users to remotely share voice and data from the phone to a variety of other products with matching Bluetooth profiles, including PCs, headsets, personal data assistants (PDAs), printers and game consoles.

Microtune’s Bluetooth MT0780 solution also enables the implementation of advanced cordless features in the NWBell phone, including seven-handset operation, the downloading of phone lists with different rings for different users, a thumb wheel for scrolling screen menus, a real-time clock, and caller-ID, call-transfer and call-conferencing functions. As another key advantage, Microtune’s solution is designed to offer exceptional voice quality and superior range, providing users multifunctional voice and data capabilities with the convenience of robust wireless connectivity.
