Kontron Mobile Computing, Inc., today announced availability of the ReVolution™ — a rugged, Windows-compatible, convertible notebook and tablet PC designed to meet the needs of field-deployed professionals. The company is now accepting orders for the product and expects to begin shipping initial units in October.
The newest addition to Kontron’s full line of mobile computers, the convertible ReVolution truly is a first in rugged computing. With SwitchIt™, Kontron’s custom, rugged, 180-degree display hinge, the ReVolution converts from a notebook to touch-screen tablet and back again in seconds. The upgradeable ReVolution also features impressive wireless communications capabilities and rugged construction designed to support the applications and challenging working conditions now common in field computing across many industries.
“During the past few months, we’ve had the opportunity to preview the ReVolution for many of our customers working in defense, public safety and other demanding computing environments,” said Dale Szymborski, president. “The response has been excellent. Users working in these kinds of conditions immediately appreciate the benefits of a rugged, convertible notebook and tablet in one. We expect that the ReVolution will be an important product for us and our partners in the VAR and system integrator channels.”
The ReVolution may now be ordered directly from Kontron Mobile Computing at 1-888-343-5396 or www.kontronmobile.com, or from authorized Kontron Mobile Computing resellers, at an estimated list price of $5,095 (actual pricing will vary based on specific product configuration and quantity). Demonstration units are expected to be available in September.
Designed to be adaptable to specific customer needs, the ReVolution may be ordered in a variety of user-determined configurations. Selected features of the ReVolution include:
World-class ruggedness. With full magnesium construction, the ReVolution is tested to U.S. military and NEMA standards for resistance to shock, vibration, water, temperature and dust. This design allows the ReVolution to take punishment that can cripple ordinary, consumer-grade notebooks.
Impressive upgradeability and modularity. Designed to extend system life, the ReVolution features upgradeable CPU modules, memory, hard drive capacities and peripheral modules. A Sunlight Readable Transflective Display is available as an option, as is an optional I/O Expansion Stick allowing additional input/output connections. Two front bays house one or two 3.5-hour batteries, or one battery and a DVD, DVD/CD-RW, CD-RW, CD-ROM or floppy drive.
Powerful processing. At the heart of the ReVolution is Kontron’s new QuickSilver CPU module with a 1.06 GHz (or higher) Intel Pentium ® III-M Processor. The QuickSilver CPU module ships standard with 128MB SDRAM (upgradeable to 640MB) and operating system support for Windows XP Professional, 2000 and 98.
Integrated, wireless communications technology. The ReVolution features embedded Bluetooth technology for wireless PAN connectivity, enabling users to connect to cell phones, airport Internet kiosks, printers, PDAs and more. It also features optional CDPD, CDMA or GSM for wireless WAN connectivity and Spread Spectrum wireless LAN (802.11b) connectivity.
