Matsushita Electronic Components Co., Ltd. and Matsushita Electronic Industrial Co., Ltd. have introduced panel-shaped speakers for personal digital assistant (PDA) apparatuses.
They are: an “Acoustic Panel” with no touch-panel functions, and an “Acoustic Touch Panel (A-TTP)” with touch-panel functions. The “Sound Window” technology of the company is employed so sound is emitted from a panel.
A protection panel for an image device, including LCD, and a speaker for sound are integrated using this technology. Natural and fully realistic sound can be accomplished by emitting sound from the whole screen.
Unconventionally, this technology, featuring the air indirect drive system (aero drive system), does not require a firm board panel. Rather, a panel to emit sound can be made from a thin film. When a panel is made from a film, even if the film touches some part, a change of sound could be averted at a minimum level, since films are pliable and other parts would vibrate.
Also, while the current mobile phones generate the received sound through little sound holes, the sound-receiving area can be extended to the whole screen using an LCD protection panel in this technology. Furthermore, as sound holes in a speaker will no longer be needed, either dust- or water-proofing measures will not be necessary. Sample shipments and mass production will begin from August 2002 and March 2003, respectively.
