Cathay Pacific Airways will place thousands of Compaq iPAQ(TM) Pocket PCs in the hands of premium air passengers purchasing round-trip business or first-class tickets between Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Toronto or Vancouver and Hong Kong. The promotion, which runs September 1 through November 15, is leveraging the success of Compaq Computer Corporation’s award-winning iPAQ Pocket PC, the world’s most powerful and best-selling handheld computer.
“With an increased popularity in mobile computing, we believe this promotion will encourage our passengers to book a premium-class seat to Hong Kong so that they can experience easy access to the Internet, content and information whenever their business or leisure travel takes them abroad,” said Tom Wright, Cathay Pacific, Americas, senior vice president.
“We selected the Compaq iPAQ to be a part of this promotion because it’s the most desirable Pocket PC on the market today,” Wright said.
Cathay Pacific Airways is anticipating boosting sales revenues during the fall season by giving iPAQ Pocket PCs and up to 20,000 AAdvantage® bonus miles to qualifying passengers who purchase full-published fare, business- class or first-class tickets from any of the company’s five North America gateway cities to Hong Kong, or beyond. To be eligible for a free iPAQ Pocket PC, outbound flights must occur before November 15, 2001, and return travel completed by December 15, 2001.
The company, anticipating that more than 2,000 premium air passengers will take advantage of the offer, will be embarking on a major direct mail, radio and print advertising campaign over the next few weeks to market the promotion.
The Compaq iPAQ Pocket PC with access to Microsoft® Pocket applications, was selected for the promotion because it offers unlimited functionality and versatility, and with an Expansion Pack and a wireless PC card, the handheld computer enables business and leisure travelers to do everything from communicating wirelessly to surfing the Internet, in addition to creating Word and Excel documents, viewing and projecting PowerPoint presentations, downloading music, viewing and editing streaming video and audio, and reading books. As wireless broadband Internet services crop up at airports, hotels, restaurants, stores and campuses, the Compaq iPAQ with a wireless PC Card allows users to surf the web or log on to a corporate network.
“There is continuing growth of demand for access to custom information whenever and wherever business and leisure travelers want it, and that is exemplified in the phenomenal success of Compaq products like the iPAQ Pocket PC,” said Leigh Morrison, vice president of enterprise sales for Compaq’s west region, headquartered in El Segundo.
“The Compaq iPAQ Pocket PC is a natural extension to other Compaq products, and we look forward to working with Cathay Pacific to help increase their sales, and at the same time, simplify and mobilize the computing experience for busy travelers on-the-go who need anytime, anywhere connectivity.”
