PacketVideo Corporation, the global leader in wireless media, and Bell Mobility, Canada’s leading provider of wireless voice and data services, today announced they are conducting Canada’s first consumer field trial of wireless multimedia services. The trial will take place in the first quarter of 2001 and will involve Bell Mobility customers.

In the Canadian wireless market Bell Mobility commands the largest market share, offering analog, cellular, and digital PCS services, as well as one- and two-way paging, data, and airline passenger communications services to nearly three million customers. Bell Mobility also offers innovative services such as e-mail, weather and traffic bulletins, as well as directory and other services over mobile handsets.

“Our customers want to access the best of the web wirelessly and soon that will require the provision of multimedia services that keep them not only informed but also entertained,” said Pierre Blouin, President and CEO of Bell Mobility. “Teaming with PacketVideo to deliver a cutting edge wireless media solution enables us to further advance the development of wireless Internet services in Canada and meet the demands of a growing and increasingly sophisticated market for wireless data services and devices.”

PacketVideo’s breakthrough encoding, serving and decoding software unlocks the profitable deployment of rich media to the mobile market through a new generation of powerful mobile devices such as Smart Phones, handheld computers, personal digital assistants and laptops. Trial participants will use Bell Mobility devices to receive high-quality audiovisual content delivered through PacketVideo’s technology over Bell Mobility’s leading wireless network. Participants will be able to access daily Canadian news updates, courtesy of CTV and Sympatico, as well as content from PacketVideo’s existing partners, such as music videos and movie trailers.

“Bell Mobility is a clear leader in adopting and introducing new wireless technologies to the Canadian market,” said Jon Herttua, vice president of Worldwide Carrier Sales for PacketVideo. “Through this trial, we look forward to learning more about Canadian consumer preferences relating to wireless multimedia and working toward commercial deployment of wireless media services to Bell Mobility’s customers.”
