AMD slashes prices on chips |

 AMD appears to be very serious about taking on Intel. In one of two major announcements on the day, AMD has announced that they are slashing the prices of their chips by as much as 61%. The most eye opening price drop comes with the dual-core Athlon 64 X2 family, which plummets by between 48.4 and 57 percent. In single-core, the Turion ML series of chips fell by 5.8 – 27% as well.
It wasn’t just the prices that were victimized in this slasher fest. A large number of chips and processors will no longer be made as well. In the Athlon family, for example, the 4800+, 4400+ and 4000+ chips are gone in the Socket AM2, Socket 939 and Energy Efficient forms. The Socket 939 FX-62 is gone, while the Socket AM2 FX-62 falls in price from $1,031 to $827. It will be interesting to see how quickly these changes trickle down to consumers, and how other chipmakers respond.
