China goes solo with own DVD format |

 Cost effective technological solutions have turned out to be a forte for China in recent years. And now dragon land is all geared up to pose a stiff challenge to global DVD manufacturers as the country recently announced plans to develop its own next-generation DVD standard. This incidentally also adds a twist to that mega ongoing tiff between HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc technologies for attaining top position of the next gen DVD standard in the world.
According to China’s official news agency Xinhua, the homegrown next gen DVD format will be far superior to HD DVD which is currently promoted by Toshiba Corp. and Universal Studios. It’s likely to offer higher definition, better sound quality and will be littered with stronger upgraded anti-piracy measures. Xinhua has quoted Lu Da, Deputy Director of National Disc Engineering Center who has strongly maintained that China is moving towards self-sufficiency in DVD standards in its own way. Lu Da has been quoted saying "With such format and related standards, we could have our own voice in the DVD industry."
The Chinese standard is expected to hit the markets by either late 2008 or early 2009. But given the Chinese low-cost, bulk manufacturing expertise, this is news which can be put in the category of “yet another threat from China” and will certainly alert all leading DVD manufacturers in the world.
